The Australian Defence Force has just announced the Accuracy International AX-SR will be the new sniper weapons system for the military. There are many robust sniper platforms with proven service records available such as the Sako M10, but the British made AX-SR has made the cut. The AX-SR rifles are a multi caliber platform allowing changes between .308, .338 Lapua and .300 Norma Magnum.
The Accuracy International AX-SR features a 6 lug bolt with a 60 degree throw and a fully adjustable chassis. The rifle measures 51 inches/129cm long, however has a folding stock to assist with transport. When folded, the total length is 41 inches/104cm.
The weight of the rifle alone, without bipod, optic, muzzlebreak or magazine is 16lbs/7.25kg. Looking at the positives, the weight of the rifle will aid in the ability to spot your own impacts through recoil. The AX-SR is also available to the civilian market and retails around $9900USD.
Australian weapons supplier NIOA will use a range of sub-contractors to supply the new sniper rifles, pistols, shotguns, personal defence weapons and fighting knives to the defence force.
We will keep you updated when we know which optics and accessories will be used with the weapons system.
