Mauser first caught my attention with the attractively priced M18 rifle, but their latest offering brings something a little different to the table. The Mauser 25 Straight Pull is the newest release from the renowned German manufacturer, and it’s turning heads for all the right reasons.
Quick Take
The Mauser 25 Straight Pull makes the most sense when its handling, configuration and practical role match what you actually want to do with it. Specs matter, but ergonomics and setup matter just as much.
- Best use case: judge it against rifles or shotguns built for the same job.
- Check before buying: weight, trigger, magazine system, optic mounting and aftermarket support.
- Think system-first: optic, mount, bipod, case and ammunition often matter as much as the firearm itself.
I have owned some military surplus Mauser’s over the years and read a few books on their history. However, at first glance the new rifles have a distinctly modern look while embracing the straight-pull hunting rifle design. There are three variants: the ‘Pure’ with a classic wooden stock, the ‘Extreme’ with a rugged synthetic stock, and the ‘Max’, a more feature rich version of the traditional wooden-stocked model.

The synthetic version of the Mauser 25 is light, at just 3.2 kg, it’s clearly designed with the active hunter in mind. The polymer stock has two colour options and features grip texture on the forend and rear grip to help in wet conditions.
The straight-pull action appears smooth, fast, and intuitive. Unlike traditional rotating bolts that require a lift and pull, the straight-pull mechanism operates with a single linear motion straight back and forward. The bolt handle is slightly swept forward, providing natural ergonomics that aid in rapid cycling.

Mauser claims sub-MOA accuracy straight out of the box, and with a free-floated barrel and tight manufacturing tolerances, it has the makings of a solid performer. The rifle is initially available in .308 Winchester, with Mauser confirming that additional calibers will be offered in the future.
The trigger is adjustable between 700g and 1,700g, making it more than suitable for both hunting and field shooting. A well-cushioned rubber buttpad helps tame recoil from heavier calibers, adding to overall shooter comfort. Mauser offers both 3-round and 5-round detachable box magazines, depending on the model and configuration.

The Mauser 25 Straight Pull is an impressive addition to the hunting rifle market. It’s not trying to be a tactical setup or a benchrest precision rifle, this is a purpose built, hard hitting hunting rifle designed for fast cycling and easy handling in the field.
FAQ
Who is the Mauser 25 Straight Pull best suited to?
The Mauser 25 Straight Pull makes the most sense for shooters looking at hunting. Focus on the action type, stock or chassis layout, magazine system and overall weight before deciding whether it fits your style of shooting.
What should I compare with the Mauser 25 Straight Pull?
Compare it with rifles built for the same job, not just rifles at the same price. Barrel profile, trigger quality, stock adjustability, magazine compatibility, spare parts and local support all matter.
What scope setup suits the Mauser 25 Straight Pull?
Match the optic to the rifle’s intended use. A lighter hunting rifle usually wants a simpler, lighter scope, while a precision or target rifle can justify more magnification, better turrets and a more detailed reticle.
