This ZeroTech Thrive HD Red Dot review is based on several months with the sight on my Axor Arms Bushpig 12-gauge. It covers the original 3 MOA high-mount reflex sight, SKU THDRS28H: a full-size 28x20mm open red dot supplied with a raised Picatinny-compatible base. It is not the smaller Thrive HD Micro Reflex reviewed elsewhere on this site.
The 12-gauge was a useful test platform because the sight had to deal with buckshot recoil, rain, heat, transport and normal rough handling. I also used the setup for close-range pig hunting in scrub, where a dot has to be visible quickly rather than look impressive only on a bench.
Quick verdict: the THDRS28H worked well as a fast, uncomplicated shotgun sight. The 3 MOA dot stayed defined to my eye, the brighter settings were usable in direct Queensland sun, and shake-awake had the sight active as I shouldered the shotgun. Its open-emitter design and high mount are the two fit questions to settle before buying.

I have kept the verdict inside those limits. The sight held up in my use and I did not notice a loss of zero, but that is not the same thing as claiming a formal military-style durability protocol.
Which Thrive HD Red Dot Is This?
ZeroTech now uses Thrive HD across several reflex sights and reticle choices. The unit here is the THDRS28H: red 3 MOA dot, high mount and 28x20mm window. The Australian page describes a popular direct-mount pattern; ZeroTech’s US listing identifies it as RMR-compatible. It is also supplied with a Picatinny/Weaver-compatible high base.

That distinction fixes the old page title, which called this a micro reflex sight. It is a reflex red dot, but it is not ZeroTech’s Micro Reflex model.

Durability on the 12-Gauge
A light red dot is easy to recommend on paper; the question was whether it would stay useful on a shotgun. My THDRS28H saw repeated buckshot recoil and the handling that comes with carrying a hunting firearm rather than keeping it in a padded case. Through the months I used it, the sight continued to switch on, the controls worked and I did not see the point of impact shift.
The 88g listed weight kept the sight from making the Bushpig feel top-heavy. The housing and high base did not add much visual bulk, although the actual cheek weld depends on the firearm. On the Axor Bushpig setup, the height worked for me; a conventional-stock rifle or a pistol may need a different base or direct-mount arrangement.
My use included wet weather and hot conditions. The -20C to +70C operating range and water-resistance rating are manufacturer specifications.

3 MOA Dot, Window and Brightness
A 3 MOA dot is a sensible middle ground for this role. It was large enough for me to acquire quickly in scrub without covering an excessive amount of the target. The 1x view also let me keep both eyes open and maintain awareness around the aiming point.
The dot looked sharp and defined to my eye. Red-dot appearance is personal, especially for a shooter with astigmatism, so a buyer who regularly sees a starburst should look through the actual sight before assuming any projected dot will appear perfectly round.
There are 11 brightness settings. I found the brighter levels visible in direct Queensland sunlight, while lower levels kept the dot from blooming as much against darker backgrounds. The plus and minus controls were easy to reach from the side of the unit without dismantling the shooting position.


Shake-Awake and Battery Access
Motion-sensing auto sleep and auto on was one of the best features for the hunting role. When I moved the shotgun up to my shoulder, the sight was already awake rather than waiting for me to find a power button. That reduced one step at the point where I wanted the setup to be simple.
ZeroTech lists a maximum battery life of 50,000 hours from one CR2032, but actual life depends heavily on brightness and movement. I would still replace a hunting-optic battery on a sensible schedule rather than waiting for a theoretical maximum.
The side-loading tray means the sight does not have to be removed for a battery change. That avoids disturbing the mounting interface and is more convenient than an optic with the cell underneath the body.


Zeroing and Adjustment
Windage and elevation move in 1 MOA clicks with 90 MOA of total travel in each direction. Zeroing the shotgun was straightforward: the adjustment scale was coarse enough to move the pattern efficiently without feeling vague. Once set, I did not observe the zero walking during my use.
For a shotgun or close-range carbine, 1 MOA clicks are entirely practical. This is not a precision rifle optic and there is no reason to judge it by fine turret feel or dialling behaviour. Set the point of impact, confirm it with the actual load and leave the capped adjustments alone.

The field-tested Trace HALO is the logical upgrade when dust, rain and debris around the emitter are a concern. The Thrive HD Micro Prism is the better comparison for a shooter who prefers an etched aiming point. The smaller Thrive HD Micro Reflex suits a more compact mounting requirement.
