Why Use a Red Dot Sight

Red dot sights are a popular choice for several reasons. They are a fast, straightforward aiming solution, allowing you to focus on the target while keeping the reticle superimposed in your line of sight. This translates to quick target acquisition, especially for close range use where seconds count. Unlike traditional iron sights which require alignment of the front and rear sights, a red dot sight simplifies the aiming process by requiring only a single point of reference and unlimited eye relief. Basically they are a great sight for quickly getting shots on target without spending too much time getting lined up behind the optic.

Design & Construction

One of the most appealing aspects of the Thrive HD Red Dot for me is its compact design. Weighing approximately 88 grams, this red dot doesn’t add any unnecessary bulk to my Axor Arms Bushpig. Measuring 45mm in length and 28mm in height (not including the mount), its sleek and very low profile, making it ideal for applications where weight and size are important considerations. The sight is also able to be used on rifles and pistols.

To survive the repeated recoil buckshot delivers on it the Thrive HD Red Dot needs to be tough. Luckily its shockproof, waterproof, and fogproof, which means it can handle the knocks and bumps that are part of the shooting sports. So far rainy weather, extreme temps and the general rough handling of life on a 12 gauge its held up. The Thrive HD words across a wide range of temperatures, from -20°C to +70°C. This adaptability means it can withstand come pretty extreme weather.

At the center of the Thrive HD is the 3 MOA red dot reticle, which offers a precise aiming point. I find the 3 MOA size dot provides a large enough dot for rapid target acquisition without obscuring too much of the target. I use this for pig hunting and I find it suitable for use in the scrub at close range  while still allowing for accuracy at moderate distances. It has 1x magnification which means that your sight picture remains true to life, making it easier to maintain focus on your surroundings as well as on the target itself.

The Thrive HD Red Dot’s lens is multi coated which enhances light transmission and helps to reduce glare, which improves overall visibility especially in low light. This clarity has been an obvious benefit for maintaining situational awareness during daylight shooting. When it comes to the clarity of the optic, I have found the Thrive HD to provide a sharp, defined dot that’s easy to see.

One of the standout features for me is its 11 brightness settings, which allows you to change the intensity of the red dot to suit your own preference or the to adapt to lighting conditions. These range from low intensity levels, suitable for low light conditions, to brighter levels that I have found works well in the bright direct sunlight here in Queensland. Adjusting the brightness is quick and intuitive, thanks to the buttons located on the side of the red dot. These are easy to access without obstructing your view or requiring you to change your shooting position.

Battery life is usually pretty good on red dots but its often a point of concern. This is because a lot of red dots you need to unmount it in order to change the battery. The ZeroTech Thrive HD is side loading, which means there’s no need to remove the entire sight to replace it. This design choice is not only convenient but also preserves the optic’s zero, saving you from the hassle of sighting it in every time you change the battery. As frequently replacing batteries can be inconvenient and costly, the ZeroTech Thrive HD addresses this with a maximum battery life of up to 50,000 hours on a single CR2032 battery.

Another neat feature is the motion sensing auto sleep and auto on function, which helps conserves battery life. It works by putting the sight to sleep during inactivity and reactivating it when it senses movement. This feature is pretty neat for hunting where as soon as I move the shotgun upto the shoulder its instantly on and ready to go, without the need to manually power it up.

Sighting it in was simple with the windage and elevation turrets that allowing for 1 MOA per click adjustments. With a total windage and elevation adjustment range of 90 MOA, the Thrive HD has plenty of room to adapt to a variety of firearms.

Summing Up

It’s been a well suited red dot for pig hunting here in Queensland. Its compact build, lightweight and solid construction make it a perfect match for my 12 gauge. I can easily see this being a good match for handgun users who need a low profile optic for rapid target shooting. On rifles, it would work similar to the shotgun and be a good match for close range where speed is needed. I enjoy its easy to use functionality with brightness adjustment, battery change, mounting and sighting in all simple to do. The durable construction and nice center dot have made it fun to use. If you are looking for a dependable red dot sight that offers a great balance between price and performance, the ZeroTech Thrive HD Red Dot is worth a look.
