I added the Maven S1.2A 80mm spotting scope to my range kit because its interchangeable eyepieces let one body cover two very different jobs. I can use the 25-50x wide-angle zoom for hunting and general observation, then fit the fixed reticle eyepiece to measure corrections for long-range shooting.
Quick verdict: The S1.2A delivers high-contrast fluorite glass, a smooth focus system and unusually useful eyepiece flexibility. It is a premium, full-size spotter, so the 65 oz-plus weight and tripod requirements are real. Buy it for image quality and adaptability, not for ultralight carry.
How I Have Used the S1.2A
My assessment comes from handling the scope, working the focus and zoom controls, observing at distance and using the reticle setup for range work. Build, Focus and Tripod Interface
The S1.2A uses an aluminium, polymer and magnesium body with an integrated sunshade and an Arca-compatible foot. The body feels substantial rather than needlessly decorative. Nitrogen purging and an IPX7-style one-metre, 30-minute water rating provide the weather protection expected from a premium field optic.
The large knurled focus collar is one of my favourite controls. It moves smoothly and gives enough precision to separate a genuinely sharp image from one that is almost there. The zoom collar has deliberate resistance, and the eyepiece locking ring keeps the removable assembly secure.
At this magnification, tripod quality is part of optical performance. A flexible leg, loose clamp or head that settles after release makes the image look worse than the glass. I use a stable support and keep the centre column low whenever possible.
Fluorite Glass and Image Quality
The S1.2A uses fluorite glass to control colour fringing and preserve detail through the image. In my use, the view has the contrast and colour accuracy that attracted me to Maven in the first place. Fine detail stays clean toward the edge, and the large objective gives the scope useful performance as light fades.
The best image is not always at maximum power. In hard midday light, heat shimmer may set the practical limit well below 50x or 65x. At dawn and dusk, exit pupil becomes smaller as magnification rises. I choose the lowest power that resolves the detail I need, then add magnification only when it provides more information.
Wide-Angle Zoom Eyepiece
The 25-50x eyepiece is the natural hunting and all-round option. At 25x, the 115 ft field at 1,000 yards makes it easier to acquire and follow animals. At 50x, it provides enough reach for closer inspection without making the entire experience as narrow and demanding as a high-power-only setup.

MOA and MIL Reticle Eyepieces
The fixed 30x reticle eyepiece is the feature that makes this scope especially relevant to PrecisionRifle readers. When the spotter and shooter use the same unit, an impact can be measured and communicated directly: for example, 0.6 MIL left and 0.3 MIL high. That is far more useful than vague clock-face corrections.
I would choose MIL for a MIL-based rifle system and MOA for an MOA system. The reticle should be level, the tripod stable and the spotter familiar with the subtensions before a timed stage or hunting shot. Independent long-range testing also praises how quickly the fixed reticle supports corrections.
In the Field and at the Range
At the range, weight is not a major concern and the 80mm body earns its place through detail and measurement. In the mountains, the same weight becomes a deliberate compromise. The S1.2A is better suited to hunts where trophy assessment and long glassing sessions justify a full-size spotter than to a minimalist day where binoculars can do the job.
The integrated sunshade is particularly useful in harsh Australian light and also helps keep rain off the objective. The angled body is comfortable for shared viewing and low tripod positions, although a straight body can be faster for initial target acquisition for some users.
What I Would Improve
- Weight: a complete body, eyepiece, tripod and head is a serious carry commitment.
- Eyepiece cost: the system value should be judged with the eyepieces you actually need, not body price alone.
- High-power expectations: 65x cannot overcome mirage, poor light or a weak tripod.
- Accessory planning: protect the unused eyepiece and mount opening from dust during changes.
