What Separates the Nightforce Families
NX6: broad choice and FieldSet turrets
Released as a family in 2026, the Nightforce NX6 range covers 1-6×24 through 6-36×56. It is the easiest Nightforce family to start with when the role is clear but the exact focal plane, magnification and turret format still need to be chosen. Most magnification ranges offer first and second focal plane versions, while the 4-24×50 is SFP-only and the 5-30×56 is FFP-only.
The FieldSet system is the family feature to understand. Exposed versions can be reset with a common field tool, while eligible capped models can be converted to an exposed standard or custom BDC dial. That does not make every NX6 interchangeable: the reticles, tube diameter, adjustment range and turret configuration still vary by model.
NX8: compact scopes with an 8x zoom ratio
NX8 scopes trade some eye-box forgiveness and low-light margin at maximum power for compact dimensions and a wide zoom ratio. That trade can be worthwhile on a precision rimfire, crossover rifle or centrefire setup where a shorter optic is genuinely useful. It is less compelling when the buyer simply wants the largest possible image and does not care about length or weight.
SHV: a simpler route into Nightforce
SHV stands for ShooterHunterVarminter. The family is built around practical hunting, varmint and range use rather than the broad reticle and turret choices of NX8 or ATACR. The current SHV 5-20×56 is a second focal plane, MOA-based scope with a ZeroSet elevation turret. It is not especially light, but the control layout is straightforward.
ATACR: premium long-range and hard-use scopes
ATACR is the line to inspect when mechanical range, reticle choice, high-magnification performance and a hard-use design matter more than minimum weight. The family spans low-power through high-magnification models. A 7-35×56 F1 is a very different tool from a 1-8×24 F1, so the ATACR name alone is not enough to choose a scope.
NXS, Competition and Precision Benchrest
NXS is the older proven general-purpose and long-range family. Competition and Precision Benchrest scopes move further toward target work, fine aiming and known-distance shooting. They should not be treated as cheaper ATACR substitutes because their focal-plane choices, reticles, turrets and intended roles are different.
Nightforce NX6 Scopes
The NX6 lineup is the current Nightforce family with the widest spread of magnification roles. The SHV family is best understood as Nightforce simplifying the decisions for hunters and recreational shooters. The current models are not all the same: compact 3-10×42 and mid-range 4-14×50 variants fill different roles from the larger 5-20×56.
For a rifle that will be carried, compare the complete mounted weight and the low-end field of view rather than focusing on the 56mm objective. Nightforce Precision Benchrest Scopes
Precision Benchrest models are specialist target optics. They prioritise fine aiming, repeatable adjustment and magnification for small targets at known distances. A fixed or narrow-purpose target rifle can benefit from a fine reticle and high magnification. Nightforce Competition Scopes
Nightforce Competition scopes target F-Class, benchrest and other disciplines where the rifle is stable and small aiming errors matter. High maximum magnification can help resolve a fine target face, but mirage and atmospheric conditions still determine how much of that power is usable.
These scopes are not the first recommendation for PRS-style positional work or hunting. A competition target optic and a field competition optic solve different problems: one emphasises a fine, stable sight picture; the other also needs a usable low end, rapid holds and forgiving position behind the rifle.




Nightforce NXS Scopes
NXS earned its reputation as a mechanically dependable long-range family before NX8 and the broader current ATACR range existed. It still suits shooters who want a proven dialling scope and do not need the shortest body, newest reticle selection or widest zoom ratio.
The main buying question is whether the exact NXS configuration remains a better fit than a newer NX6, NX8 or ATACR. Compare the focal plane, reticle, adjustment unit, parallax minimum, turret stop, weight and warranty support for the actual SKU. A familiar family name does not make every used NXS the same.
Used-scope buyers should also confirm that turrets and reticle use the same unit, inspect ring marks and tube damage, check illumination and parallax controls, and verify the model against Nightforce documentation. Serial-number and provenance checks are more useful than judging authenticity from colour alone.







Nightforce NX8 Scopes
NX8 is strongest when compact size has a purpose. The 4-32×50 F1 I used offered a very broad working range in a 340mm body. On my Ruger Precision Rifle it was straightforward to zero, dial and return through the 100-500 yard work described in the dedicated review.
The practical limitation appeared at the top of the range. At 32x, the official 1.6mm exit pupil means a more exact eye position and less low-light margin. The useful lesson is not that maximum power is bad; it is that 16-24x can often be the better field setting until a small target or precise zero check justifies more.

Nightforce ATACR Scopes
ATACR scopes sit at the premium end of the Nightforce riflescope range. The family makes the most sense when the rifle is expected to dial repeatedly, use a modern FFP reticle and work in demanding long-range or tactical conditions. That capability comes with higher cost and, on the large models, considerable mounted weight.
For long-range precision, compare the 4-16×42, 4-20×50, 5-25×56 and 7-35×56 by low-end field of view, top-end image requirement, parallax, elevation range and reticle. A 7-35×56 is attractive for small targets and observation, but the lower minimum power and smaller objective of a 4-16×42 can be more useful on a rifle that moves through field positions.

Nightforce CFS Spotting Scope

How to Choose a Nightforce Scope
- Define the closest and farthest realistic target. The low end controls target acquisition; maximum power is only useful when conditions support it.
- Choose FFP or SFP from the shooting method. FFP keeps angular subtensions valid throughout the zoom range. SFP keeps the reticle visually consistent but calibrated holds normally apply at a specified magnification.

Nightforce Reticles: MIL-XT, MOA-XT and Simpler Options
