A useful review should make the evidence visible. Readers should be able to tell what was used, how it was used, what was measured and what remains unverified.
PrecisionRifle publishes owner reviews, field tests, limited range impressions, research-led guides and broader buying guides. Those are not interchangeable. The evidence label on an article explains which kind of page the reader is looking at.
Review Labels Used on the Site
Owner Review
The writer owned the exact product or configuration discussed. The article should state the setup, relevant period of use and any available round count, distance, conditions or load carried. Ownership does not automatically prove long-term durability, so missing endurance data should still be acknowledged.
Field Test
The exact product was used on the range or in the field, but it may have been borrowed, loaned or supplied for evaluation. The article should identify the test basis and avoid turning a short evaluation into a long-term reliability claim.
Range Impressions
The writer had limited direct access, such as a range session or demonstration. Handling, controls and immediate performance can be discussed, but durability, ownership support and extended field performance remain outside the test.
Research-Led Guide
The exact product was not personally tested. Current manufacturer documentation, official technical material and relevant supporting sources are used to explain specifications, model differences and buyer fit. Research-led pages should not adopt another reviewer’s experience as first-person evidence.
Buying Guide or Comparison
A guide may combine direct experience with research-led entries. A product can be included because it fits a genuine use case, but the page should distinguish firsthand conclusions from specification-based analysis. A best-for-purpose recommendation needs a stated reason and should not be treated as a claim that every product was tested together.
What a Test Should Record
- Rifles and firearms: exact model, calibre and configuration; ammunition and approximate round count when recorded; distances and group method; stoppages; handling observations; and the limits of the test.
- Scopes and rangefinders: exact model, reticle and adjustment units; rifle and mounting setup; distances and conditions; tracking or return-to-zero only when performed; glass comparisons; controls; and any app or mounting limitations.
- Bipods, packs and field gear: load, terrain, weather, duration, fit, adjustment, failures and changes noticed over time.
- Test limits: what was not measured, which configurations were not used and which conclusions should not be generalised.
Evidence and Sources
Original photographs and video can support a direct-use claim, but they do not replace a clear description of the test. Manufacturer images may illustrate a model or feature and are not proof that the product was used by the writer.
Specifications should be checked against current official documents for the exact model. Forum discussions and other owner reports can identify recurring questions or provide context, but they should be attributed or summarised as wider owner evidence, not rewritten as the writer’s personal experience. Legal and regulatory statements should point readers to the relevant official authority because Australian requirements can change by jurisdiction and configuration.
Products, Affiliate Links and Disclosures
An article should state when a product was borrowed, loaned or supplied for review where that relationship is known. Some articles contain affiliate links, which may earn PrecisionRifle a commission at no extra cost to the reader. A purchase link does not turn a specification into a test result and should not determine the conclusion.
Updates, Older Articles and Corrections
The site contains older articles written before these evidence labels were standard. They are being reviewed and converted as they receive a material update. Until an older page states its basis clearly, readers should not assume that every product mentioned was personally tested.
A modified date should reflect a substantive change such as corrected specifications, new test evidence, changed model availability or clearer buyer guidance.
