Optics Spotlight: Maven’s New M-Series Monoculars (M.1 10×42 & M.2 12×50)

Maven has added two premium single-barrel options to sit above the popular CM.1, the M.1 10×42 and M.2 12×50. Both use a Schmidt–Pechan roof prism, ED glass, and a lightweight chassis, and both are built to bring the optical pedigree of the B-Series binoculars into a streamlined monocular format. Looking at the two models, the M.1 is your compact, everyday carry, the M.2 is the reachier, little more dusk friendlier tool.

On paper the two models look closely related, and in the hand they feel it: solid, purposeful, and easy to operate one-handed. The Schmidt–Pechan prism design and premium coatings keep contrast high and colours neutral, while the ED glass reins in chromatic aberration when you’re glassing bright edges or shimmering heat. Where they diverge is in how each balances magnification, field of view, and low-light performance for different kinds of country.

The M.1 is the sensible little optic when you want a bright, steady 10× view with a generous field. It runs a 42 mm objective with a 4.2 mm exit pupil, which makes it forgiving to hold and quick to align. Maven quotes an impressive 94.5% light transmission and a twilight factor of 20.5, numbers that suit its “all-day” brief rather than positioning it as a pure dusk specialist. It’s genuinely pocket-friendly at 2.13″ × 5.63″ and 14.7 oz (417g), so it disappears into a jacket or cargo pocket without becoming a brick.

If your glassing leans toward open ridgelines and the last half-hour of light, the M.2 is the one to reach for. You still get a 4.2 mm exit pupil, but paired with a larger 50 mm objective and 12× magnification. Eye relief is 17.5 mm, light transmission remains a high 93.8%, and the twilight factor bumps to 24.5 a change you’ll notice as the light falls and fine detail starts to slip away in smaller optics. It’s the bigger tool at 2.31″ × 6.56″ and 20.0 oz (567 g), yet it’s still easy to carry in a belt pouch or pack side pocket.

Could easily fit in the pocket.

In practice, the M.1’s lower magnification and wider apparent view make it steadier hand held and faster for scanning mirage, reading wind cues, and mapping terrain between strings. It’s the monocular you’ll happily keep on you from the first walk-in to the drive home. The M.2’s extra magnification and larger objective claw back fine detail at distance and hold it deeper into dusk; the trade-off is a touch more shake if you’re not braced, a narrower view, and extra weight. If you glass in short bursts all day, the M.1 is the lighter, more versatile choice. If your use case pushes longer ridgelines and low light edges, the M.2’s resolving power earns its keep.

Looks to be an easy to use little monocular.

As with the rest of Maven’s line, both models are covered by the brand’s ‘Unconditional Lifetime Warranty’, a straightforward repair/replace commitment that doesn’t hinge on original ownership. It’s exactly the kind of backing you want for an optic that will live in a pack, cop dust, and see real field use. Bottom line, M.1 for pocketable, all day glassing with steadiness and speed, M.2 for extra reach and better low light detail when the shadows get long
