There’s never a dull moment in the optics world with new long distance shooting gear being announced almost every week. This week is no exception with the announcement of the reticle included Maven Optics S1.2 25-50x80mm spotting scope. Regular readers will know I am a fan of their optics, running several on my hunting rifles, as their direct to consumer model and high quality make them extremely good value. The new long distance shooting focused optic from Maven is a nice surprise to see them create more target shooting focused optics.
Quick Take
The Maven S1.2 25-50×80 is best judged by how it fits the rifle, not just by the spec sheet. Glass quality, reticle design, controls, mounting height and real-world use matter more than chasing one big headline number.
- Best use case: match the optic to the rifle?s actual job before worrying about brand hype.
- Check before buying: reticle style, eye relief, turret feel, weight and mounting requirements.
- Do not forget the mount: good rings and correct height are part of the optic system.

The new Maven Optics S1.2 25-50×80 spotting scope features the standard magnification eye piece as well as an interchangeable eye piece with a reticle. This is a pretty neat feature as it allows you to get the most out of your spotting scope. For example you could keep the regular eye piece in for hunting and swap it out to the reticle eye piece for long distance shooting, eliminating the need for two different spotters. The reticle is available in MOA or MIL variants as shown below.

The spotter is available in both angled and straight variants for individual preferences. There is also an included lens shade that extends out from the front objective lens. This is particularity important in Australia where we have harsh high contrast lighting. For mounting on a tripod the spotter comes with an Arca-Swiss base.

Overall its great to see more high quality reticle based spotting scopes available to long distance shooters. Its also exciting to see Maven starting to release more target shooting focused optics, as their strength for along time has been their hunting range. I will be keeping an eye out for what else Maven has in store for us.
