First released in 2023, the Schmidt & Bender 3-18×42 Meta has just been updated with some interesting features that put it in a whole new category.
Quick Take
The Schmidt and Bender 3-18×42 Meta is best judged by how it fits the rifle, not just by the spec sheet. Glass quality, reticle design, controls, mounting height and real-world use matter more than chasing one big headline number.
- Best use case: match the optic to the rifle?s actual job before worrying about brand hype.
- Check before buying: reticle style, eye relief, turret feel, weight and mounting requirements.
- Do not forget the mount: good rings and correct height are part of the optic system.

This scope was first released as a hunting model with the simple LP7 reticle and offered in the second focal plane only. Schmidt & Bender have taken this scope in a new direction adding a variant in the first focal plane with the new SBX reticle.

The SBX reticle is marketed as a crossover reticle, as its features suit both hunting and competition work. It’s no easy task catering to both functions, but Schmidt & Bender look to have designed a great reticle. It’s a Christmas tree style with a well thought out centre crosshair that’s illuminated. There’s plenty of holdover capability with 10 MIL on the vertical and horizontal stadia lines. I like the solid outer bars that would help when quickly bringing the rifle up and getting on target when hunting.
Schmidt & Bender released the newly designed TR²ID reticle last year for their 6-36×56 PM II and now we have the SBX crossover added to the 3-18×42 Meta. I’m enjoying the new long distance and crossover designs and keen to see what else is in the works at S&B HQ.
DT23
STLT
As for the new turrets there’s the DT23 and STLT that are now options for the Meta. The DT23 has two rotations with a total of 23 MRAD. On the second turn a rotation indicator pops up, letting you know you’re on the second revolution. I do like these as their a little more low profile but still pack plenty of elevation. They are also lockable which is a good feature for hunting. The STLT is a little simpler, with 12 MRAD on one rotation.
This is the only hunting scope on offer from S&B to feature the double turn locking turret. Together with the new SBX crossover reticle, its shaping up to be one of the best combination hunting and range use scopes on the market.
Overall the Meta weighs in at 780g / 27.51oz, which is a good weight for hunting and has a 30mm maintube. The new versions are due for release in September, so if you are in the market and can hold out that long, they will be worth checking out.
FAQ
Is the Schmidt and Bender 3-18×42 Meta worth it?
The Schmidt and Bender 3-18×42 Meta is worth considering if its magnification, reticle, glass quality and adjustment system match how you actually shoot. For rifle setup and shooting style, the biggest question is whether it gives you a clearer aiming solution than the optic you would otherwise buy.
Who is the Schmidt and Bender 3-18×42 Meta best suited to?
It suits shooters who want an optic for rifle setup and shooting style and are willing to choose based on real features rather than brand name alone. Check the reticle, turret layout, weight and warranty before deciding.
What should I compare with the Schmidt and Bender 3-18×42 Meta?
Compare it against optics in the same role and price bracket. Look closely at glass clarity, turret tracking, reticle usability, low-light performance, weight and how easy it is to get support or accessories locally.
