Optics Spotlight: Leica PRS 5-30×56

There’s an interesting optic I keep seeing from time to time at the range, the Leica PRS 5‑30×56. It’s Leica’s first real reach into tactical scopes a long range riflescope built to focus on performance, without hype.

It runs from 5× to 30× magnification. That 6× zoom range gives you some good flexibility to switch from scanning to targeting without too much trouble. It’s built on a 34 mm main tube and offers a massive 32 mil of elevation correction. That’s more than most scopes at 30×, and it’s not something Leica has done before.

There are two main variants to note. One comes with Leica’s Ballistic reticle with illuminated hold‑over lines. The other has a reticle called PRB a “Christmas tree” style with wind holds and a centre aiming dot. That dot was designed in collaboration with Cal Zant from PrecisionRifleBlog, and it’s made so your holdovers stay accurate across magnification levels  .

Glass quality is there too. Leica claims over 90 per cent light transmission with fully multi‑coated lenses. You get clear contrast and sharp edges even in lower light, backed by their AquaDura coating to repel moisture and dirt.

Handling wise, it’s got multi‑turn turrets with zero‑reset and zero‑stop features that don’t need tools. The adjustment is tactile and audible the clicks feel firm. Parallax is adjustable from around 20 metres out to infinity, and eye relief stays generous so you’re not struggling to stay in the picture .

It’s waterproof, fog‑proof, shock‑resistant, and comes nitrogen‑filled. Weight’s around 1.03 kg (that’s 36 oz), and total length is about 365 mm about 14‑odd inches.

It made its debut back in 2020 at Shot Show, Leica’s first proper entry into the tactical, competition‑style optics market. The optics team worked with PRS shooters to tune what matters for precision practical features.

Overall, the Leica PRS 5-30×56 is a serious choice if you want a long-range riflescope that’s straightforward, precise, and built tough. You’ve got the choice between Ballistic or PRB reticle both first focal plane depending on your preference for hold lines or the centre dot bookmark.
