5.11 RUSH 12 vs RUSH 24: Which Backpack Size Makes Sense?

The 5.11 RUSH 12 2.0 and RUSH 24 2.0 are separated by more than their names. The smaller bag holds 24 litres; the larger holds 37 litres. That is a substantial jump in space, not a minor upgrade, and it changes how practical the bag is for everyday use.

I would start with the RUSH 12 unless there is a clear reason your normal load needs the RUSH 24. More capacity is worthwhile when it keeps a jacket, lunch and bulky protective cases inside the bag. It is less useful when it simply encourages you to carry things you do not need.

The Capacity Difference

The RUSH 24 offers 13 litres more listed volume, roughly 54% above the RUSH 12. Compartment dimensions are not a promise that a rigid object of the same size will slide through the opening. Padding, seams and the shape of the item still matter.

When the RUSH 12 Is the Better Buy

A daypack should hold the things you carry every day without becoming a burden when half empty. If your regular load is a laptop, lunch, light jacket, water and a few small accessories, the smaller bag deserves the first look. Its limitation is usually bulky clothing or several hard cases competing for the same main compartment.

Our RUSH 12 2.0 review covers the bag in more detail, including its organisation and the compromises of a structured tactical pack. This comparison is about whether you actually need to move up a size, rather than assuming the larger model is better.

There is also value in a bag that puts a natural limit on unnecessary extras. If you usually carry the same compact load, leaving another thirteen litres available will not make your day more comfortable. A smaller bag can be easier to keep close to your chair, place in the car and move through crowded spaces.

When the RUSH 24 Earns Its Extra Space

The larger pack becomes more convincing when your normal day includes bulky rather than merely heavy equipment. A winter layer, large lunch container and protective cases can overwhelm a small bag even when their combined weight is modest. Keeping those items inside the main compartment is generally neater than attaching a collection of pouches outside.

For travel, the extra space can accommodate a change of clothing without displacing the things you need to reach quickly. Whether it qualifies for a particular cabin or under-seat allowance depends on the airline and how fully it is packed. The model name is not an airline size certification.

I would not use capacity as a substitute for checking the carry system. A larger bag lets you put more inside it, but that says little about how a full load will feel on your shoulders. If your usual load is genuinely heavy, try the pack loaded and compare it with a purpose-built hiking pack rather than looking only at pocket count.

Organisation: Useful Pockets or Extra Packing Work?

The RUSH family appeals to people who want to separate small items rather than empty one large compartment to find them. Both models offer dedicated organisation, a laptop sleeve and hydration accommodation. The larger bag provides additional capacity, but it does not remove the need to choose a sensible place for frequently used items.

For range-day essentials, keep hearing protection and glasses easy to reach and protected from loose items. A small pouch can help consolidate charging cables or personal essentials. Adding pouches everywhere, however, can make a compact pack surprisingly wide and inconvenient.

Before buying either size, lay your normal load on a table. Separate what must travel inside a protective case from what can compress into spare space. Compare that collection with the usable opening and compartment shape, not just the total litre figure. This is especially important for camera and observation equipment.

Which Is Better for Everyday Carry?

The RUSH 12 is my default recommendation when everyday use is the main job. Choose the RUSH 24 when you can identify the extra items that justify it, such as winter clothing or short-trip luggage. Buying the bigger model solely because it costs only a little more is not necessarily better value.

Neither is the obvious answer for someone who wants the lightest possible walking pack or discreet office styling. Durable-looking construction and extensive external webbing are part of the appeal, but they are also reasons to consider a different type of backpack.

Bottom Line

Pick the RUSH 12 for a compact, repeatable daily load. Pick the RUSH 24 when useful equipment regularly exceeds that space. If the smaller bag only struggles a couple of times a year, a separate travel bag may make more sense than carrying the larger backpack every other day.

For the smaller items that often travel inside it, our hearing-protection guide is a useful companion. Sort out what you need to carry first; the backpack choice becomes much easier afterwards.
