Leica has added a new look to its long-range riflescope line with the PRS 5-30x56i FDE Edition. The limited-edition model swaps the familiar black finish for Flat Dark Earth and pairs it with matching accessories. Underneath, it retains the established PRS format rather than introducing a new magnification range or a second-generation optical design.
That distinction matters. This is a new version of the PRS, not a replacement for everything that came before it. For readers already familiar with our Leica PRS 5-30×56 review, the headline is the finish and the package surrounding it.
What Changes With the FDE Edition?
The colour treatment extends beyond the scope body. Leica lists matching FDE Tenebraex flip caps and a sunshade, with white markings providing contrast against the brown finish. A throw lever is also included, alongside the tool, battery and cleaning material.
It is a more complete visual package than simply changing the tube colour. The caps and sunshade are prominent parts of the finished scope, so including them in the same finish makes sense. Leica also presents the edition alongside its new Geovid Max 10×42 binoculars as part of a coordinated FDE offering.
The FDE scope carries product number 51301. Leica’s model description specifies the illuminated L-PRB reticle. The broader PRS family’s other reticle options should not be assumed to be alternative configurations of this limited edition.
The Familiar PRS Specification
The core numbers remain recognisable: 5-30x magnification, a 56mm objective and a 34mm main tube. The reticle sits in the first focal plane, and Leica lists 32 MILs of elevation travel. Overall length is 365mm and listed weight is 1,030g.
Those dimensions place it firmly in the full-size precision-optics category. The FDE treatment has not turned the PRS into a compact or lightweight model, and buyers looking for a substantially different form factor will not find one here.
The multi-turn elevation turret, tool-free turret-scale zeroing and adjustable zero stop also remain part of the specification. These are distinct features: Leica supplies an onboard tool for the zero-stop adjustment. The entire arrangement should not be described as tool-free.
A New Finish, Not a New Optical Generation
Leica quotes more than 90 per cent light transmission and lists AquaDura lens coating, nitrogen filling and waterproofing to four metres. These are manufacturer specifications; the announcement does not establish a new optical advantage over the black PRS.
The original PRS arrived in 2020 with the same central combination of a 6x zoom range, first-focal-plane reticle and 34mm tube. The FDE edition keeps that identity. Existing owners therefore have a straightforward way to read this launch: a different presentation of a known model, rather than evidence that their current scope has been superseded.
Price and the Place in Leica’s Range
Leica’s US listing puts the PRS FDE Edition at US$3,399. That is US-market pricing, not an Australian retail quote. Leica describes the model as a limited edition, but its launch material does not state a production quantity.

The appeal is clear without overstating it. Someone who already likes the PRS now has a factory FDE option with coordinated accessories. Someone happy with the black version has not suddenly lost anything. This release adds choice to the range; it does not need to be presented as a technical revolution to be interesting.
