MDT Send it Gen 2: Precision Rifle Level Indicator

Upgrading to an electronic level for your precision rifle? The MDT Send It Gen 2 helps you keep your rifle perfectly level by using lights instead of a traditional bubble level. This little devise  senses the rifle’s tilt and shows an LED colour to tell you if you’re level. A green light means the rifle is level, while a blue or red light warns that you’re tilted left or right. It’s a simple and fast way to check rifle cant. When the light is green, you’re good to squeeze the trigger and take the shot. I run a bubble level that’s incorporated into my SPUHR mount, but I can see the advantages of a dedicated system like this.

Running it appears straightforward. You attach it to your rifle, turn it on, and shoot as normal. It mounts to a standard Picatinny rail on the top or side of your scope. There’s also an ocular mounting kit, which is basically a band and fibre optic ring that goes around the eyepiece of your scope. That then lets you see the lights while looking through the scope, without having to move your head. With the older version, many shooters just checked the light with their non-shooting eye or catch it in their peripheral. This makes it quicker than a bubble level, especially in awkward positions or low light. You can also adjust the brightness of the LEDs to suit different conditions. In practice, I think it works like a traffic light for your rifle, green means shoot, any other colour means adjust.

The Gen 2 runs on a single CR2032 battery and the spec sheet says it can last for up to 200 hours. That’s likely enough for a season of comps or range time without needing a battery swap. One cool feature I saw is the low battery indicator, and to help save battery further the device goes to sleep after about 10 minutes of no movement. That helps conserve power. It’s also weather resistant and built to handle use in rain. It only weighs about 30 grams and is much smaller than the first gen model. It also lets you set how sensitive it is, you can adjust the level tolerance from 0.2 degrees up to 1 degree of cant before the light changes. That’s a useful setting I wasn’t expecting and helps tailor it depending on how strict you want to be about being perfectly level.

Compared to the earlier version, the Gen 2 is more compact. MDT dropped the backup bubble level from the first model and focused on the LED system. The design is modular, and the mounting options are better too. The smaller footprint means it won’t take up much space or get in the way as much as the Gen 1. For shooters who used the Gen 1, it’s worth noting that older mounts may not fit the new unit, so the new mounting hardware is important.

MDT Send it Gen 2

This kind of electronic level isn’t new. Devices like the Deros level were around years ago, but they were bulky and had shorter battery life. The MDT Send It Gen 2 isn’t doing anything radically different, but it’s a little more refined to be more practical. Traditional bubble levels are cheaper, and they work, but they can be slow to settle and you usually have to take your eye off the target to read them. The Send It gives you immediate, clear feedback so you can stay focused and shoot more confidently.

This isn’t a budget piece of kit. At around $230 USD, it’s going to leave a hole in the wallet. For that money, you could buy several well made bubble levels but if you compete the convenience and speed is where the value is.

In the end, the MDT Send It Gen 2 looks to be a good tool for competition shooters. It tells you if your rifle is level, and it does that clearly, quickly, and without getting in the way. When its a green light, you’re good to go.
